Veridian Sight – VOL.2 ; Fractured Sight

Chapter 7: The Calm Before the Storm

The investigation into the attack in the pine clearing dragged on, each day yielding fewer and fewer leads. The state crime lab’s analysis of the evidence yielded nothing concrete. The fingerprints lifted from the scene didn’t match any known offenders. The etching on the knife remained unidentified. The descriptions provided by Sarah and the injured thugs were vague and unhelpful.

Sheriff Brody, usually a man of quiet optimism, grew increasingly frustrated. He felt a sense of unease, a feeling that they were missing something crucial, that they were operating in the dark while a larger threat loomed. He spent hours poring over the case files, replaying the events in his mind, searching for a connection, a pattern, anything that could break the deadlock.

Agent Davies, ever the professional, remained calm and methodical. She expanded the search perimeter, reaching out to neighboring towns and counties, hoping to find a link to the attackers. She requested assistance from federal agencies, bringing in experts in organized crime and counterterrorism. But even with their resources and expertise, the investigation remained stagnant.

A tense quiet settled over the Clover Creek Sheriff’s Department, a lull before the storm. The deputies patrolled the streets with increased vigilance, their eyes scanning the shadows, their hands resting on their weapons. The townspeople, though trying to maintain a semblance of normalcy, felt the undercurrent of anxiety, the unspoken fear that something was about to happen.

Then, the storm broke.

It began with a series of seemingly unrelated incidents, each escalating in intensity. First, a fire erupted at the Clover Creek Power Station, plunging the town into darkness. Then, reports of vandalism flooded in, businesses downtown with their windows smashed, graffiti sprayed on the walls. A bank robbery occurred, with the perpetrators displaying a level of coordination and violence that was shocking for Clover Creek.

Sheriff Brody, his phone ringing non-stop, raced from one scene to another, his face grim. He quickly realized that these weren’t isolated incidents; they were coordinated attacks, a deliberate attempt to overwhelm the town’s defenses.

And then, the call came in from the diner.

Martha, her voice frantic and terrified, reported that a group of armed individuals had stormed the diner, holding the patrons hostage. She described them as heavily armed, ruthless, and led by a man with a silver snake ring.

Brody’s blood ran cold. Silas. He knew, with a sickening certainty, that this was Silas’s move, his opening salvo in a war against Clover Creek. And he knew that Veridian Sight was their only hope.
