Veridian Sight – VOL.2 ; Fractured Sight
Chapter 4: The Tangled Web
The Clover Creek Sheriff’s Department, with the assistance of state investigators, worked tirelessly to unravel the mystery of the attack. They ran fingerprints, analyzed the recovered weapons, and canvassed the surrounding area for witnesses. The two thugs, once they regained consciousness, were interrogated, but they offered little useful information. They were small-time muscle, hired from out of town, with no knowledge of their employer’s identity or motives.
The knife that had cut Elias proved to be the most intriguing clue. It was a custom-made blade, expertly crafted, with a unique etching on the handle – a series of interlocking triangles. The state crime lab ran the etching through their databases, but it didn’t match any known gangs or criminal organizations.
Sheriff Brody, frustrated by the lack of progress, reviewed Sarah Jenkins’s statement repeatedly. She could only describe the leader as tall, with cold eyes and a silver snake ring. The ring, Brody thought, that was something. He put out a call to pawn shops and jewelry stores in a wide radius, hoping someone might recognize it.
Agent Davies, the lead investigator from the state police, focused on the location of the attack. It was isolated, near the edge of the forest, suggesting the attackers knew the area or had carefully planned the ambush. She ordered a thorough search of the woods, looking for any signs of a hideout or a trail.
Despite their efforts, the authorities found themselves hitting dead ends. The attackers were ghosts, leaving behind few traces of their existence. A sense of unease settled over the investigation, a feeling that they were dealing with something more complex and dangerous than a simple mugging gone wrong.
