Veridian Sight – VOL.2 ; Fractured Sight

Chapter 2: Sirens and Shadows

The wailing sirens grew louder, their red and blue lights flashing through the trees, painting the clearing in an eerie, pulsating glow. Sheriff Brody was the first to arrive, his patrol car skidding to a halt near the edge of the woods. He emerged, his face grim, his hand resting on his holster.

He took in the scene: the two unconscious thugs, their bodies sprawled on the ground, the discarded taser and brass knuckles, and Elias, standing amidst it all, his suit torn and bloodied.

“What in God’s name happened here, Elias?” Brody’s voice was a mixture of concern and disbelief.

Elias, still catching his breath, tried to give a concise account of the fight. He described the three figures, their attack on Sarah, and his attempt to intervene. He emphasized the leader’s skill and the fact that he had used a knife.

Brody listened intently, his gaze sweeping over the scene. He called for backup, and soon the clearing was filled with the flashing lights and the voices of responding officers. Paramedics rushed in to attend to the injured thugs.

“You did this?” Brody asked, his eyes fixed on Elias. “You took down these men?”

Elias nodded, his voice hoarse. “I had to protect her, Sheriff. They were going to hurt her.”

Brody sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I know you were trying to help, Elias. But this… this is different. This isn’t just a bar fight or a petty theft. This is serious.”

He gestured to the unconscious thugs. “These guys aren’t locals. And the way they were armed… it looks organized.”

He paused, his gaze hardening. “And you, Elias… you’re hurt. You were cut. This is escalating.”

As the paramedics tended to his wounds, Elias felt a strange mix of relief and apprehension. He was glad the authorities had arrived, but he also knew that their investigation would only scratch the surface. They wouldn’t understand the true nature of the threat, the cold intelligence of the leader with the snake ring, and the feeling that this was just the beginning of something larger.

The other officers began to search the surrounding area, their flashlights cutting through the darkness. They found Sarah, shaken but unharmed, hiding behind a cluster of trees. She confirmed Elias’s account of the events, her voice trembling as she described the leader’s cruelty.

As the night wore on, the clearing became a scene of organized chaos. The authorities collected evidence, took statements, and tried to piece together the events of the night. Elias, despite his injuries, remained at the scene, offering his assistance, his enhanced senses on high alert.

He could feel the tension in the air, the undercurrent of fear and uncertainty. Clover Creek had been shaken, not just by the alien encounter, but now by this new, more human threat. And Elias knew, with a chilling certainty, that the shadows were growing deeper.
