Veridian Sight – VOL.2 ; Fractured Sight
Chapter 14: Smoke and Salvation
The thick black smoke filled the Clover Creek Diner, obscuring vision and sowing confusion. Gunfire erupted blindly, the sharp cracks echoing through the enclosed space. Elias, moving with practiced speed and agility within the smoke, focused on the terrified hostages huddled in the corner.
“Stay down! Follow my voice!” he commanded, his voice a low rumble that cut through the din. He moved towards them, a black and white blur in the swirling darkness, guiding them towards the back exit he had spotted from the ventilation shaft.
Razor, disoriented by the smoke, fired wildly in their direction, the bullets whizzing past. Elias used his enhanced reflexes to shield the hostages, pushing them lower to the ground. He reached Razor quickly, a swift jab to her pressure points incapacitating her without lethal force. She crumpled to the ground, unconscious.
Hammer, his large frame lumbering through the smoke, roared in frustration. He swung his shotgun blindly, the blast tearing through the air. Elias used his speed to evade the shot, grabbing a nearby table and using it as a makeshift shield to protect the fleeing hostages. He delivered a powerful kick to Hammer’s legs, sending the brute crashing to the floor, his shotgun clattering away.
Whisper, near the back, was frantically working on his device, its lights flashing erratically. Elias could sense a dangerous energy building around it. He had to stop him.
But his priority remained the hostages. He ushered them towards the back exit, his voice firm but reassuring. “This way! Stay close to me!”
Martha, her face streaked with tears, held tightly to Sarah’s hand as they followed Elias through the smoke-filled chaos. He could feel their fear, but also a glimmer of hope.
As the last of the hostages escaped through the back door into the relative safety of the alleyway, Elias turned his attention to Silas.
The smoke was beginning to clear, revealing Silas standing amidst the wreckage, his knife still clutched in his hand, his eyes burning with a cold fury. He had seen Elias’s actions, his focus on saving the hostages.
“You interfere again!” Silas snarled, his voice filled with venom. “You will regret this, shadow man!”
This time, Elias didn’t hesitate. He moved towards Silas, his speed and agility honed by weeks of training. He knew Silas was skilled, dangerous, and connected to something unknown. But Elias had a responsibility to protect his town, and he wouldn’t back down.
The second confrontation began, a dance of speed and skill in the smoky ruins of the Clover Creek Diner.
