Veridian Sight – VOL. 4: Beyond Human Design

Chapter 19: Opening the Cell

The descent into the lower levels of Project Nightingale was a descent into the heart of darkness. The facility’s sterile, metallic corridors were now plunged into near-total darkness, the only illumination coming from the faint glow of Elias’s suit cam and the emergency lights that flickered intermittently. The air was thick with the smell of burnt-out electronics and the metallic tang of blood.

Evelyn led the way, her memories of the facility becoming clearer with each step. She recalled the layout of the sub-levels, the locations of key security checkpoints, and the access codes for the reinforced cells. Her knowledge was invaluable, guiding Elias through the labyrinthine corridors and bypassing the facility’s automated defenses.

They encountered pockets of resistance – guards armed with stun batons and projectile weapons, disoriented by the power outage but still dangerous. Elias moved with brutal efficiency, his enhanced speed and strength overwhelming them before they could mount a proper defense. He disabled them non-lethally, his priority being the rescue of Tempest, not unnecessary bloodshed.

As they reached sub-level five, the oppressive atmosphere intensified. The walls were thicker here, the air colder, and the silence more profound. This was where they had held the most dangerous subjects, the ones whose powers were deemed too volatile to be contained on the upper levels.

Evelyn stopped before a massive reinforced cell, its door sealed with multiple locks and energy dampeners. “This is it,” she whispered, her voice filled with a mixture of dread and hope. “Tempest’s cell.”

Elias examined the cell door. The energy dampeners were still active, though weakened by the overload. They pulsed with a faint, rhythmic hum, their energy fields distorting the air around them. He could feel their power, a subtle but potent suppression of his own abilities.

“Evelyn, the access code,” Elias said, his voice low and focused.

Evelyn recited a series of numbers, her voice trembling slightly. Elias entered the code into the cell’s control panel. The locks disengaged with a series of heavy clicks, but the energy dampeners remained active.

“It’s not enough,” Elias realized. “The dampeners are still holding.”

He looked at the cell door, then at Evelyn. “Stand back.”

Focusing his speed, Elias began to move his hands again, generating another electrical current. This time, he channeled the energy into the control panel, targeting the dampeners directly. The panel sparked and smoked, and the dampeners on the cell door flickered violently.

With a final surge of power, Elias overloaded the dampeners. The rhythmic hum died, and the energy fields around the cell door collapsed.

The heavy cell door slid open, revealing the figure within.
