Veridian Sight – VOL.3 ; It Takes Two

Chapter 5: Stirrings Within, Plans Without

The sterile white walls of Elias’s cell had become a canvas of his frustration. Each passing day of confinement fueled a growing resentment and a desperate need to understand his captivity. Tonight, the subtle shift in the facility’s atmosphere – the undercurrent of urgency he sensed – spurred him to action.

He waited until the late hours when the activity in the corridor seemed to lull. Using the wall for leverage, he slowly and deliberately sat up, the movement sending a wave of dizziness through him. His muscles protested with a dull ache, but they responded. He swung his legs over the side of the bed, his bare feet touching the cold floor.

His first act of defiance was simple: he would not remain docile. He would test his limits, gauge the security, and look for any weaknesses. He stood, swaying slightly, and took a tentative step. The movement was slow and unsteady, but it was progress.

He began to move around the small room, pushing his body, and reawakening his dormant abilities. His Optimized Metabolic Efficiency with Anabolic Predisposition kicked in, his muscles slowly regaining their strength and coordination. He focused on his hearing, mapping the subtle sounds of the facility, trying to discern guard rotations and security systems.

He reached the heavy door of his cell. It was secured with a keypad and a reinforced lock. He pressed his ear against the cold metal, listening for any mechanical sounds, any hint of its internal workings. He knew a direct physical assault in his weakened state was futile, but observation was his first weapon.

Meanwhile, a few miles away in the pre-dawn darkness, Sarah and Brody finalized their reconnaissance of Blackwood Creek Annex. They had identified a potential blind spot in the surveillance coverage near the facility’s loading docks on the west side. The area was less frequently patrolled and offered a possible point of infiltration.

“The security is tight, Sarah,” Brody murmured, pointing to a distant camera rotating on its axis. “We’ll have to be quick and quiet.”

Sarah, her backpack containing basic tools and the information she had gathered, nodded resolutely. “We don’t know what they’re doing to Elias in there. We have to try.”

Their plan was risky. Brody would use his (unofficial) access to local infrastructure schematics to try and locate service tunnels or less monitored entry points near the loading docks. Sarah would rely on her stealth and observation skills to navigate the external security measures.

As the first hint of dawn painted the eastern sky, both Elias within the sterile confines of Blackwood Creek Annex and Sarah and Brody in the silent woods outside were poised to take their first decisive steps. The walls of secrecy were about to be challenged from both the inside and the outside.
