Veridian Sight – VOL.3 ; It Takes Two

Chapter 12: Truths Unveiled, Sanctuaries Sought

The maintenance vehicle sped away from Blackwood Creek Annex, leaving the chaos and danger behind. The occupants were a strange mix: a former prisoner, a determined journalist, a seasoned officer, and a conflicted scientist, all united by their escape.

Kai, still weak and recovering in the back, leaned against the seat, their breathing shallow. Elias, his side still throbbing, kept a watchful eye on them. Sarah, her adrenaline fading, felt a mix of relief and lingering anxiety. Brody, his grip tight on his weapon, scanned the road ahead. Aris, clutching the data drive, seemed lost in thought.

“Where do we go?” Brody asked, breaking the silence.

“I know a place,” Aris said, his voice hesitant. “Another Chimera facility. Abandoned. It’s not far from here.”

He explained that after Project Chimera was officially shut down, some research continued in secret at smaller, more isolated locations. One such facility, located in the outskirts of Clover Creek, had been abandoned after a series of… incidents. Aris believed it could provide them with a temporary base, a place to regroup and plan their next move.

As they drove, Aris began to reveal the truth about Elias’s past and the nature of Project Chimera. He spoke of the Roswell incident, not as a crash, but as a brief encounter, a targeted infusion of alien technology into a select group of newborns, Elias among them. He explained that the scientists had identified specific genetic markers that made these individuals receptive to the enhancements.

“Your abilities… they’re not natural, Elias,” Aris said, his voice filled with regret. “They’re a result of that technology. We were trying to understand it, to control it, to weaponize it.”

He detailed the experiments, the ethical breaches, and the eventual shutdown of the project. But he also revealed that the research had continued in secret, leading to individuals like Kai, whose powers were even more volatile and dangerous.

Elias listened in stunned silence, the pieces of his life suddenly falling into a disturbing, alien-shaped puzzle. The whispers on the crimson wind, the strange connection he felt to the alien object on the highway – it all made a horrifying kind of sense now.

Kai, regaining some strength, spoke up from the back. “If we’re going to keep using my powers, I need something… something to regulate them. They hurt me. They’re unstable.”

They looked at Aris. “Can you build something?” Kai asked.

Aris nodded, his mind already working. “I think so. With the right materials. The abandoned facility might have some of the equipment I need.”

The abandoned Chimera facility became their destination, a potential sanctuary, and a place to confront the truth of their pasts and their uncertain future.
