Veridian Sight – VOL.3 ; It Takes Two

Chapter 19: Deconstructing the Observer, Fortifying the Sanctuary

The Kryll probe, despite its minuscule size, presented a formidable challenge. Aris, with Kai’s assistance in manipulating energy fields, worked meticulously to analyze its intricate structure. Their efforts to physically dismantle it proved futile; the materials were incredibly resilient and seemed to possess self-repairing properties at a microscopic level.

“We can’t just break it,” Aris concluded, frustration evident in his voice. “Its technology is far too advanced. We need to find a way to interface with it, to understand its data storage, if it has any.”

Kai, using controlled bursts of energy, attempted to scan the probe’s internal components. Their enhanced senses, combined with Aris’s rudimentary sensors, revealed complex layers of circuitry and what appeared to be a highly compressed storage unit. However, they couldn’t decipher the alien data protocols.

“It’s like trying to read a language we don’t even have the alphabet for,” Aris admitted.

Despite the difficulty in analyzing the probe, the very fact of its existence spurred a new level of caution within the group.

“We can’t let them know we’re onto them,” Elias stressed, his enhanced intuition telling him that any drastic change in their behavior might trigger an unwanted response. “We continue as if nothing has changed. Clean the base, work on our defenses, act… normal.”

Following Elias’s advice, the team maintained a semblance of routine. Sarah continued to document her findings, Brody reinforced the facility’s perimeter with scavenged materials and booby traps, and Kai practiced controlling their powers. All the while, Aris continued his attempts to unlock the secrets of the alien probe in his makeshift lab.

Their priority shifted towards making the abandoned facility a more secure and defensible location. Brody rigged up early warning systems using salvaged sensors and tripwires. Kai, with their controlled energy manipulation, helped to reinforce structural weaknesses in the buildings. Elias, with his enhanced senses, took on the role of perimeter security, constantly scanning their surroundings for any signs of intrusion.

Days turned into nights as they worked, the small alien probe a constant reminder of the unseen eyes that might be watching them. The tension was palpable, a silent understanding that their sanctuary was potentially compromised. Their only hope lay in understanding their observers and preparing for whatever their arrival signified. The playing field felt uneven, but their combined skills and the alien artifact in their possession offered a sliver of a chance to level it.
