Veridian Sight – VOL.3 ; It Takes Two

Chapter 9: Alliance in the Ashes

“Subject Zero is our priority,” Elias said, his voice firm, his Veridian Sight highlighting the structural damage caused by the energy bursts. “They’re a wild card, and their rampage is drawing attention. Our best chance of escape is to find them and bring them along, if possible.”

Sarah and Brody exchanged uneasy glances but nodded in agreement. Elias’s enhanced senses and knowledge of the facility’s layout, however limited, made him their best guide.

They moved cautiously through the ravaged corridors, following the trails of scorched metal and shattered concrete left by Subject Zero. The air crackled with residual energy. They encountered more security personnel, some injured, others still actively searching. Elias used his speed and agility to evade or quickly subdue them, prioritizing non-lethal takedowns. Sarah and Brody provided cover and secured their path.

They eventually reached sublevel three, the epicenter of the explosions. The area was heavily damaged, containment cells ripped apart, and scientific equipment scattered and destroyed. Amidst the chaos, they found Subject Zero.

The individual was young, appearing to be in their early twenties, with wild, untamed hair and eyes that glowed with an unstable energy. They were cornered by a heavily armed security team, energy crackling around their hands. Fear and desperation radiated from them.

“Hold!” Elias called out, stepping into the open. His Veridian Sight allowed him to see the raw power emanating from Subject Zero, a volatile mix of fear and immense potential.

The security team turned their weapons towards Elias. “Veridian Sight! Stand down!”

“They’re scared and cornered,” Elias said, his voice calm but firm. “Let them go. We all want out of here.”

A tense standoff ensued. Subject Zero glanced at Elias, a flicker of curiosity in their glowing eyes. Elias projected a sense of calm, trying to connect with the fear he sensed within them.

“Who are you?” Subject Zero asked, their voice raw and trembling, energy sparking around their fingertips.

“Someone who was held here against their will, just like you,” Elias replied. “We can help each other get out.”

Sarah stepped forward slowly, her hands raised in a non-threatening gesture. “We just want to leave. No one else needs to get hurt.”

Brody kept his weapon lowered but ready, his eyes scanning the security team.

After a tense moment, Subject Zero lowered their hands slightly, the energy around them subsiding. “They… they experimented on me,” they whispered, their voice filled with pain and anger.

“We know,” Elias said. “They did the same to me. Let’s get out of here, together. We can figure out the rest later.”

A fragile truce was formed. The security team, hesitant but outnumbered and facing an unpredictable energy manipulator, slowly backed down.

As they navigated their escape route, Elias, Sarah, and Brody learned more about Subject Zero, whose real name was Kai. Kai’s augmentations allowed them to generate and control various forms of energy, but the process was unstable and often painful. They had been held at Blackwood Creek Annex for years, subjected to relentless experimentation.

Along the way, they found remnants of research logs and computer files, revealing fragments of Project Chimera’s horrifying agenda – the exploitation of individuals with unique genetic markers, enhanced through alien technology, for potential weaponization. Elias’s own connection to the Roswell incident became chillingly clear.

The escape was far from over, but now they were a team, an unlikely alliance forged in the fires of captivity.
