The internet, with its vast but superficial information access and anonymity, provides a shield for this effect. It allows the confidently ignorant to gain a following, assert absolute authority, and launch aggressive attacks on genuine expertise without fear of real-world reputation damage. When expertise is presented as a simple Google search result, the perceived barrier between novice and master collapses, leading to an epidemic of overconfident, combative amateurs.
  2. Illusory Superiority (Better-Than-Average Effect): This is the tendency to overestimate one’s own qualities and abilities, relative to others. Online, this is supercharged by the comparative nature of feeds, where users only post their best moments, most clever thoughts, and strongest moral stances. This constant comparison leads users to believe they are the uniquely rational, ethical, and perceptive actor in the system, making it easier to justify treating all others—especially those who disagree—as intellectually or morally compromised targets.

The Crisis of Perception

Finally, two critical biases shape what we perceive and how quickly we react.

  1. Negativity Bias: Humans naturally give more attention and weight to negative information than to positive information. The Offense Engine exploits this by prioritizing content framed by crisis, moral panic, failure, or anger. This skewed perception validates their perpetual offensive stance, turning rare extremist examples into the perceived norm.

The intersection of these biases transforms the modern digital experience into a continuous war room, where every interaction is pre-loaded with hostile interpretation and every scroll is a mission briefing for the next conflict.
